Dynamic Chart Sync - PowerPoint Chart Automation Tool

Dynamic Chart Sync - PowerPoint Chart Automation Tool

Automate PowerPoint chart updates by synchronizing dynamic JSON and Excel data with presentation templates.

Project Overview

Dynamic Chart Sync is an individual custom-made automation solution that provides a dynamic update of charts within a PowerPoint presentation by using JSON and Excel data sources. The solution allows a user to submit the pre-designed PowerPoint presentation with charts and get an updated presentation with the up-to-date information on the charts.

This solution has been developed as a reusable .NET Core 6.0 class library with a console application that can be used for integrating the library into other projects. It processes PowerPoint chart structure, maps JSON data to chart series and categories, manages chart data from the Excel source, and creates the updated PPTX file with the presentation structure and style preserved.

Project Objectives

  • Make automated PowerPoint chart updates through dynamic data sources possible.
  • Prevent unnecessary manual chart updates.
  • Create a precise mapping between the JSON data and PowerPoint chart series and categories.
  • Facilitate the use of Excel-based chart data.
  • Ensure consistent chart styling and formatting in the PowerPoint slides.
  • Allow dynamic manipulation of the chart data – adding, deleting, changing.
  • Produce a reusable .NET Core DLL component for integration into other applications.

Business Challenges

1. Manual PowerPoint Chart Modifications

Modifying charts manually in the presentation for every newly added dataset was an error-prone process. A mechanism for automatic modifications was needed.

2. Mapping JSON Values to Charts

Dynamic JSON values had to be mapped to the series, categories, and data points of each chart. Every chart was characterized by a specific XML structure.

3. Complex XML Structures of Charts

Charts consisted of a complex XML structure representing their data, categories, series, labels, legends, and axes. An understanding of this structure and its further modification was necessary.

4. Connection Between Excel and PowerPoint Data

Charts had to keep a connection with Excel-based data in order to allow users to change the data of charts manually. It was important to solve this issue.

5. Retaining the Existing Design of Presentation

It was necessary to update the data in all slides while maintaining visual structure and presentation themes.

Our Solutions

In order to automate the manual process of updating charts and data management of the presentation, we have created a proprietary Dynamic Chart Sync solution with .NET Core 6.0.

Automated PowerPoint Chart Updates

Scripts were created that automatically perform addition, removal, and updating of chart values according to the newest JSON file.

Mapping JSON data to PowerPoint charts

This solution maps JSON data to PowerPoint chart series, categories, and data points. The analysis of PowerPoint XML structure was performed in order to reflect dynamic values in the generated presentation.

Charts linked to Excel

Charts in PowerPoint are dynamically linked to Excel data; therefore, PowerPoint is able to read and update chart information via Excel. In addition, this solution provides the possibility for manual modification of chart and Excel data in the generated presentation.

Custom .NET Core Library

A custom .NET Core 6.0 DLL was developed in order to integrate this functionality into the client’s solution. A console application was also created as an example of this DLL usage.

Key Benefits

  • Automation of PowerPoint chart updates
  • Decrease manual work on presentations
  • Correct mapping of JSON data to charts
  • Integration of PowerPoint charts with Excel data
  • Dynamic insertion, deletion, and editing of chart values
  • Preservation of consistency of chart design within presentation slides
  • Avoidance of typing and formatting mistakes
  • Reusable DLL-based integration solution
  • Simplification of recurring presentation creation

Key Features

JSON Data Mapping

Maps dynamic JSON values to PowerPoint chart series, categories, and data points to ensure accurate representation of the source data.

Chart Configuration & Creation

Creates and updates charts across PowerPoint slides, including horizontal and vertical axes, labels, legends, series, and data points.

Automated Data Update Scripting

Automates the addition, removal, and modification of chart values based on the latest input data.

Excel Integration & Data Linking

Links PowerPoint charts with Excel data so that chart information can be dynamically updated and manually modified when required.

Multi-Slide Chart Synchronization

Synchronizes chart data across multiple presentation slides while maintaining the predefined chart structure and formatting.

Consistent Chart Styling

Maintains consistent chart formatting and sequential styling across the presentation while allowing chart colors to follow the defined series theme.

Dynamic Chart Customization

Supports customization of chart appearance and series colors according to the configured presentation theme.

XML-Based Chart Processing

Processes the underlying PowerPoint XML structures to accurately update chart categories, series, labels, legends, and data points.

Input & Output File Management

Provides a structured input/output process where the base JSON files and PowerPoint template are provided through an input folder and the generated presentation is stored in the output folder.

Reusable .NET DLL

Provides a custom .NET Core 6.0 class library that can be integrated into the client’s existing applications.

Console Application Integration

Includes a console application demonstrating how the custom DLL can be integrated and used for automated PowerPoint generation.
